A small machine with a big story

From bank hours to anytime access.

The ATM began with a simple idea: people should not have to wait for a bank to open to reach their own cash. What started as one machine became a connected convenience woven into everyday life.

1967 · The beginning

Cash stepped outside the teller window

The first operational ATM opened at a Barclays branch in Enfield, London. For the first time, a machine dispensed cash directly to customers beyond traditional counter service.

1970s onward · The connection

One machine became a network

Cards, personal identification numbers and shared electronic networks helped ATMs expand from individual bank experiments into dependable, widely available access points.

Today · The purpose continues

Cash access meets people where they are

Modern ATMs bring convenient cash access into the places people already visit. The technology changed, but the purpose stayed remarkably clear: access, choice and convenience.
